Brainwaves and Neural Entrainment
Depending on the activity we engage in, the brain generates distinct patterns of electrical activity known as brainwaves. These brainwaves reflect the dynamic exchange of information between neurons and are classified into four primary types: Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta.
Delta 0.1 to 3.9 Hz:
Deep, dreamless sleep, deep trance, self-healing.
Theta 4 to 7.9 Hz:
Deep meditation, light sleep, problem solving, insight.
Alpha 8 to 13.9 Hz:
Relaxation, light meditation, creativity.
Beta 14 to 30 Hz:
Normal waking state, concentration, energy, alertness.
Exposure to music or sound frequencies specifically designed for neural stimulation can influence brainwave patterns and, consequently, alter states of consciousness. This process, known as brainwave or neural entrainment, involves the application of structured auditory stimuli to modulate neural oscillations and elicit shifts in systemic brain activity. Research has shown that auditory stimulation through music can enhance immune response, promote relaxation, elevate mood, and reduce stress levels.
Our music uses audio technologies such as 'binaural beats' and 'mono beats' (a subtype of isochronic tones) to encourage changes in brainwave activity, particularly within the theta and delta frequency bands. Binaural beats are created when the brain processes two auditory signals of similar frequency, presented separately to the left and right ear through stereo headphones. Mono beats or isochronic tones, on the other hand, consist of evenly spaced, distinct pulses of sound that are delivered at specific frequencies. Unlike binaural beats, they do not require headphones and can be effective through speakers. Both techniques are designed to support deep relaxation, meditative states, and mental clarity.
To deepen your experience, you can explore the Brainwave Lab — our free interactive sound environment designed for mindful experimentation. It allows you to engage directly with psychoacoustic elements, adjust entrainment parameters, and discover how subtle shifts in frequency and rhythm can influence your mental state. Whether you're seeking clarity, calm, or creative flow, the Brainwave Lab offers a safe and inspiring space to explore the science of sound. You can launch the Brainwave Lab anytime — either via the violet circular button in the lower right corner or through the top navigation menu. It’s available in your browser and as a standalone app across all major platforms.
